Principal Investigator: Patrick T Mokgethi Bsc

Study Objectives:

  1. To determine the prevalence of Pre-treatment drug resistance (PDR) and acquired drug resistance (ADR) mutations in HIV positive non-citizens in Botswana with detectable viral load.

Hypothesis; Non-citizens living with HIV in Botswana harbour some drug resistance mutations leading to future treatment failure

  1. To assess the phylogenetic relatedness of the HIV strains circulating in non-citizens and citizen population.

Hypothesis; Non-citizens living with HIV in Botswana harbour HIV strains similar to those found in the citizen population.

Study Design:

This will be a cross-sectional study done at Botswana Harvard HIV Reference Laboratory. Samples will be collected from HIV-1 positive non-citizens who are on ART and treatment naïve patients attending Independence Surgery private clinic in Gaborone, Botswana and other health care clinics. Genotypic resistance testing will be performed in individuals with detectable viral load.

Study Population and Size:

The study will use plasma samples collected from adults (>18 years) HIV-1 positive non-citizens who are treatment naïve or ART experienced attending Independence Surgery, private clinic in Gaborone.

A total of 300 plasma samples with detectable viral load (>40cp/ml) collected from adults (>18 years) HIV-1 positive non-citizens who are treatment naïve or ART experienced attending Independence Surgery, private clinic in Gaborone

Study duration: 2 years

Study Results: Study is on-going and no results yet.
